During the Atlantic slave trade, Africans who were forcibly brought to the Americas used the Jembe or what is known as the African drums to communicate through code. When slaves were captured and brought to America they were stripped from their own culture, language and religion. Today music genres developed by African Americans have played a key role in the American music industry and continues to expand.
