Kashmir was first ruled under the British from 1858-1947. Britain split the Indian subcontinent into two countries based on religion, Pakistan (Islam) and India (Hinduism). But in 1947 Kashmir stood as a battle ground until it gained independence October 26, with the majority of there population being Muslims . Narenda Modi, Prime minister of India decided to revoke Article 370 of their constitution, to change the status of the state of Jammu and Kashmir, increasing India's power. Article 370 granted the people of Kashmir special status over their rights and it's ability to formulate laws for the states permanent residents. Since August 5, Indian forces mobilized hundreds of thousands of troops, detained Kashmiris and enforced a curfew resulting in food and medicine shortages, violating their human rights.
