Strong, Powerful and an Aviator for change !

She was recently featured on Wired magazine on her activism for Somali Immigrant workers. 23-year-old Nimo Omar is a college student and co-founder of Amwood center, an organization, building East African workers to organize and enforce their rights. The daughter of Somali immigrants gradually moved towards activism during college. When attending High school she recalled a time when white boys taunted her, threatened to trip her and called her a terrorist. Omar quoted ¨I'm not a part of the fabric of this country¨. Speaking four languages, English, Somali, Oromo, and Amharic she exemplifies her area of expertise through advocating. Living in Shakopee, Minnesota many of the people worked at the local Amazon factory, including her brother and uncle but never knew about the harsh conditions that lead to back pain and other injuries. A worker at the warehouse remarked how their working conditions were inhumane. A crew working boxed orders would be enlisted to do 230 per hour and sometimes 300 items every 60 minutes. Most of the strikers were Somali Muslim immigrants. Before the strike, Omar would visit the Amazon shuttle to get into contact with some workers and hear their stories. Through time people eventually spoke up about working in the warehouse. Many of the Muslim workers talked about the issue of not having a designated prayer room, so when they would go to make Salat (daily prayers made by Muslims ) they would lose time against their rate. But Nimo Omar, the Amwood Center and community members stood with the workers on a Strike.
